Route 66; Rainy Day
On a rainy October day in Chicago, my wife and I stood on the steps of the Chicago Art Institute looking out at the first few blocks of Route 66 as it begins its journey to California. We had just come from viewing Caillebotte's "Paris Street; Rainy Day" in the museum. “Route 66; Rainy Day” was accepted into the 2023 de Young Open in San Francisco.

About The Artist
I began painting and drawing for the first time in 2014 at the age of 58. My affinity for painting surprised everyone around me, not the least of all, me. My painting, “Red,” won First Place for oil paintings at the 2024 Marin County Fair. My paintings “Gallery JS” and “Route 66; Rainy Day” were accepted into the 2020 and 2023 de Young Opens (respectively).
Artist Statement
I look for light and shadows, contrasts, reflections, an unusual perspective, strong geometries, and mood. I’m in search of a compelling moment in time, somewhere on the street, the sidewalk, or in a building. I often take dozens of photos and return to the site several times, day and night, and in the rain when possible. The final painting is my cumulative impression of the subject.
