Becoming Visible: Grief to Rage to Seed
Becoming Visible: Grief to Rage to Seed is part of the ‘Paper Narratives’ series - a collection of constructed 300# laser cut watercolor paper collages exploring the path to self-knowledge through intimacy with shadow.
Line becomes form becomes mass. Mass casts shadow. Shadow cloaks the pathway home. Becoming Visible: Grief to Rage to Seed illustrates the moment when moving through rage into grief opens one heart in the journey of somatic female wisdom.

About The Artist
A USC School of Architecture graduate, Carolyn Ellis began as a designer in New York, then attended NYU film school, moving into set design. Seeking more wilderness and depth, she moved to Santa Fe to complete her MA at St. John’s College, and reentered furniture and lighting design. After founding Shih & Co. in No. California, she now blends storytelling, myth, and design in her visual work.
Artist Statement
An explorer at heart, I've journeyed from architecture school in LA to set design in NYC and launched a national fashion line. My path took me from global travels to the stillness of New Mexico, where I broke open and met my shadow. My work explores tender questions—what we long for, fear, and love—through narrative mark-making, archetypes, and symbols.
